Are you saying that Armbian only has one partition - root, which also contains a boot directory?
That would be a viable solution for my case as well, remove the boot partition completely and put all its contents in to /boot of the root partition.
I'm not very knowledgeable with u-boot and it's hard for me to tell what exactly happens, does it create a bootloader before any other data on the disk or is it embedded into the boot partition? I for sure know that there are some files that u-boot uses on this boot partition of mine.
