Beginners • Re: Detecting capacity on USB power supply

We would like the guide to be able to learn remaining power level without opening up the satchel and peering at the battery pack.
The USB PD specification does allow for USB battery packs to report charge status but I've never seen one that actually did it. Your CM4 setup doesn't support USB PD communication though so it wouldn't work anyway. Pi 5 does have USB PD but it only supports fixed supplies so wouldn't work.
If that is still the case here, can I ask for some additional color? There ARE protocols for this, based on this reading: https://unix.stackexchange.com/question ... pdo-or-pps and, say, this one https://askubuntu.com/questions/1466278 ... t-charging.
Those two threads are querying the battery management controller inside the battery of the laptop being used.

I don't think there is any easy solution for this. Even basic voltage level monitoring would require potentially dangerous modifications to each battery pack to get the raw cell voltage. Monitoring the output won't work as it'll be a steady 5V until it runs out then will abruptly cut off.
