If it still doesn't work after any change it would be worth trying with a different Pico just in case the one you have has been damaged through applying 5V.

Thankfully the Pico appears to have survived the 5v onslaught on its GPIO pins. I have now tested the rewired board and with 3.3V on the pins everything operates as it should.
