But here's where it gets interesting. The affected machine started the reboot (as if the reboot had been executed locally), but then hung on the "wallpaper" screen (as it usually does). This is the point where I usually assume it has crashed hard and I reach for the power cord. This time, though, just out of laziness, I let several minutes go by and then, amazingly, it proceeded to continue the reboot process and rebooted itself. So, I guess patience can be a virtue (or is it laziness?).
Just for the record, I want to add a note from today. Today, this very machine had this problem. LXTERMINAL (of all things) went into a D wait and was making the whole system weird. Interestingly, I was able to ssh in from another machine as long as I specify a command on the ssh command line. However, if I ssh in without a command - to get a shell on the affected machine - it just hangs.I ask because I have one machine that is up all the time, but every so often (say, every few months), it gets stuck in a "D wait" and I have to power-cycle it to get it working again. The machine is used primarily to run omxplayer and what happens is that eventually omxplayer (or dbus) gets stuck. When that happens, I can reboot from the command line, but the reboot does not complete (b/c of the process stuck in "D wait"), so I end up power-cycling.
