I recently started to setup a NAS using a Pi4B with a SATA SSD using RaspberryPi OS Lite and OMV. My first intention was to set this up mainly for Time Machine backups of my two Macs. But later I thought I get a larger SSD and add some network file storage too, for data I want to share in my network but not in a cloud. I have gone through some struggles, some caused by myself being unexperienced with a Pi, CLI etc. and some hardware related (the first Pi apparently had any hardware issue due to bad transport packacking). So I am getting a new one today.
It is not so much effort to setup my small system with OMV but it still takes time, so with the first Pi I started to run backups with an OMV plugin using dd option. I thought I get an .img file which I then can easily flash with the official imager to a backup SD card. But I have no idea how to make use of the files I got (see screenshot).
Therefore I was searching for an easy solution to create an image file from the SD card which can be used with eg the Pi Imager which I can run with MacOS (Sonoma). Do you have any recommendation? Similar to Win32Imager on Windows.
Is there a simple way to use dd in CLI to backup my SD card (or USB stick - see below) as .img file to a specific folder in my NAS folders which I then can access from my Mac to create a backup SD card?
Second thing I am "struggling" right now is, stay with SD card or use a USB stick to boot and run the OS with OMV? My NAS won´t be accessed so often, besides the Time Machine backups so a SD might be OK? Having a SanDisk Extreme Pro. Or better use an USB stick? Would an USB stick get me any remarkable benefit for my use case? And if yes, is it already enough to use one with USB 2.0? If I should/can stick with SD cards, is it worth using industrial grade ones or cards used for eg surveillance cameras?
