The operator I don't understand, or even see the need for, is → : material implication:
It was mostly "invented" in order of completeness for all possible operations. I guess there is some interlock system somewhere in the world that uses it, probably unknowingly.
I guess some of the younger people may not remember the NAND days, where all logic was created out of NAND gates because they were fast, cheap and can create any other function (ie complete).
Using only or predominately NAND was also very handy for repair because if a single gate dies there was sometimes a spare gate elsewhere you could patch in, I remember some boards having a completely spare chip added in vacant space so it could be patched in for repair or design/functional changes.
NAND is the non-conjunction operation in boolean algebra.
