Not quite true, SMB3 extensions have had a lot of work, but it isn't quite ready for main stream use yet, you can use what is ready if you compile Samba yourself in developer mode and add 'smb3 unix extensions = yes' to the 'global' part of smb.conf .
The difficulty is Libre Office assumes Unix-style file locking for the typical Linux build and Samba deprecated Unix extensions about 10 years ago in the name of security. Since HP stopped being interested in Unix compatibility, little progress has been made adding Unix extensions to the new and more secure Samba protocol levels.
