Hi Phil thanks for the history. I have recently come to the Pi family. I had a task to design a solution for railway door locking on heritage stock and I saw the Rpi as a suitable solution. I needed to use the relay HAT and the GPIO to sense that doors were locked. Anyway I looked around for a suitable library that would stand the test of time, not be supported by a lone individual and expected to be available long term. This I found in libgpiod. As you have said people thought they were being forced into libgpiod. This is not the fault of the Linux kernal developers but that the RPi GPIO hardware has changed invalidating old libraries and the supporters have deemed not to update their work.
To learn RPi GPIO I am using the Freenove starter kit but it depends on WiringPi which is now defunct. I am changing the code to use libgpiod. Once I got over the initial learning curve this is straight forward. Thanks for you work.
