hmmm .... cheating may be a last resort. First will try waiting for GUI to boot and use autostart to see if that works.My experiments indicate the sound service isn't running yet in crontab.

If you try the cheating method, the ampersand (&) at the end of your crontab entry is important. The cheat will not work without it.
That indicates you want the OS to run this as a thread, don't wait for it to return, and continue to boot.
