MicroPython • Building MicroPython on a Mac

I am a Mac user and my current machine is an M1 iMac. I use Thonny and BBEdit for my MicroPython work. No complaints.

I want to experiment with frozen byte code and hence need to be able to build MicroPython.

Is is possible to build MicroPython on the M1 iMac?
If so, is the process documented anywhere? What, if any, are the pre-requisites?

Or, is it either not possible, not recommended or something to be avoided at all costs?
