It may be more setup, but the underlying code for MotionEye OS (MotionEye) is still being updated to my knowledge.

Has the underlying code been patched to increase reliability?
Personally I've not used MotionEye on its own. But according to its features on Github, it can save recording data to Google Drive, but I assume it does offline as well.
Not sure how that fits with the original question…

So your take would be to first install Raspbian then follow instructions to install MotionEye?
I'm using Motion Eye OS on several Pi's, 3B+ and 4B's. I found it underperformed on a Pi Zero. I'm currently not using Motion Detection. I did try it once or twice but found it fiddly to setup. I'm more interested in watching the live feeds, it's my main use.
Love to read from others' experience! Even though watching live feeds is not practical for me as those feathered bipeds come whenever they want :)
For the background, I used the Zero W because it was small, relatively cheap and the 4 series didn't exist at the time. Now it does, but is really expensive, which is really a shame since one could theoretically get a reasonably performing commercial IP camera with sound and IR lighting for less than a Pi 4B+Official camera module+box…
