Edit: I went into config and it’s saying root is not an SDcard
At this distance in time and space things are very unclear.
There must be files on your bootable medium. otherwise it would not be possible for the Operating System to boot up.
Maybe your historic installation of Raspbian Jessie was one that did not include the Desktop GUI?
It there any practical reason why you cannot acquire a new microSD card - perhaps one with a copy of The Raspberry Pi Operating System pre-installed - and make a fresh start? This might be less confusing and frustrating.
