I just use a USB camera and keep the Pi in a safer place. The last one I got cost me a whopping 3€. In my case the camera is placed next to a glass door which I have no clear view on, so I get a warning when one of my pets wants to enter or leave, kind of like a doorbell for cats and dogs.
