We generally recommend labwc as the Wayland compositor over Weston. That is the default on Raspberry Pi OS Bookworm.
Using vc4-kms-v3d (again now the default) does require the display to behave correct with regard hot plug detect (HPD) and having a valid EDID. The firmware (legacy or vc4-fkms-v3d) would try reading an EDID even if HPD wasn't asserted, but vc4-kms-v3d does not. You can force hotplug by adding "vc4.force_hotplug=1" to the start of /boot/firmware/cmdline.txt.
