Are you sure that you don't have the same partition UUID rootfs on both the SD and the HDD?
It looked like it booted from the HDD both times, if cmdline.txt is using UUID then the kernel will resolve the UUID itself on the first available block device.
Oh, it could be this.
I mean, I've used the exact same IMG to make both boot devices.
I will check it asap and post back.
power on and hold the space bar to select boot device
