But, to answer your specific question, you need to make it use pi's .ssh directory, which has all the keys setup for the ssh access. The easiest (but not best) way to do this is to copy the contents of ~pi/.ssh to /root/.ssh
Many thanks; I will look into that.
I tried copying the keys from ~/.ssh to /.ssh but I still can't ssh as root without a password being asked for.
