True, and I use it, but keep in mind that LO on PIOS (Bullesye) is version 7.0.4 and the latest release is 25.2 https://www.libreoffice.org/. I've seen that different Linux distro's have different versions of products seemly in their ability to support them.Linux (and Windows, for that matter) equivalent is LibreOffice. It comes as a standard install in the GUI desktop versions of RPiOS.
I think the key question here is whether the version in RPiOS is fully compatible with the files produced by the MS Office version his school is using and how dependent on specific software applications their teaching material is. While using Libre Office is possible it might be a significant extra hurdle to jump over.
A Pi 400 is currently £57 (https://thepihut.com/products/raspberry-pi-400), Pi 500 is £86.40 (https://thepihut.com/products/raspberry-pi-500), the Pi 500 desktop kit £115.20 (https://thepihut.com/products/raspberry ... esktop-kit). If the OP doesn't already own a PI a second hand laptop may very well be a better purchase in this case. Or a cheap Chinese made Intel NUC based system.
