I have AHT20 running with a Pico C SDK program, 400 kHz I2C.
Do take a look at the AHT20 datasheet. I think you need a 40ms powerup delay for the part. In my copy of the AHT20 DS, it is page 8, section 5.4 Sensor reading process. Right after the delay, I read the status byte, no issues.
