What I would suggest is a huge screen-based clock - Well it can at least be as huge as your screen is.it has to be something with a screen
That should require nothing more than you already have except some additional software or libraries may need to be installed.
Sure "clocks are boring" but you will learn quite a lot in making it work. You can also enhance it to have "On this day..." historical information, have it tell you what day it is, for example "It's Waitangi Day!" or a friend's birthday. You can even warn those or other events are coming up, "Clocks go forward an hour next Sunday morning".
You can pull in weather forecasts, news headlines, appointments, and before you know it you've got your own 'magic mirror' project done except for adding the mirror.
My advice is always to start simple and build on gained experience.
