Well, I've figured it out...my poor pi is all beat up.
I have 2 pins (22, 17) that appear to be fried - they always report as having voltage input to them, thus it always instantly reports "button pressed". I had tested, but never thought that two of my pins would be shot. Testing using a different (much less used/abused) AND testing on a third pin on the original pi gave me results I would have expected.
Thank you all for you input and thoughts...it helped me narrow it down to "it must be a bad pin...lets test again" and that's how i figured it out.
