In the step #5 don't remove ~/.asoundrc as it's used by the player.
In the step #6 the device and card should be defined in the ~/.asoundrc not in the /etc/asound.conf
I think the step #7 can be the last one.
You should also configure the volume control (choose 'amixer' type):
