Sorry for getting back so late on this - life intervened.
I got it working reliably with the relay. Shortened the wires as much as possible and that seemed to do the trick. Part of the problem was that I was using a cheap junk relay that was intermittent.
As to the pull up suggestion. The mosfets are driven by a microcontroller with push pull outputs so should not need them.
Will try the mosfets again when I get time.
