The bottom mounting boards have spring pins pushing up to the base of the Pi 5 pins. Ground and +5. Pogo pins?

There are alternative suppliers of the flat cables. You could get a longer one to mount the HAT on top of another HAT.

There is a thin insert for breaking out the GPIO pins to a breadboard. I did not try it as I have a Pi 4 for breadboard experiments.

The bottom mounting boards need different cases so choose the case to match the board. Some have the SSD facing the Pi 5 board while others have the SSD facing down for better cooling. The best choice is the SSD facing down and a case with air vents at the bottom for cooling.

The bottom mount is the better choice if you want to add more HATs. The flat cable running down to the adaptor may make microSD card access tricky.

The bottom mounts and some of the new top mounts have one real advantage. 2280. You can reuse 2280 size SSDs left over from upgrades of other machines. My main reason for using an alternative adaptor instead of the official one.

There is also a bottom mount adaptor with two 2280 slots.
