If it is ZigBee then I would assume so, if it is WiFi then you shouldn't need to.


Also there is the community side too, where a lot of projects start, expand or just do the little things, but you have to search for them.

(I just use the mosquito MQTT addin on HA itself)

Just spend a while looking around with HA and see if it is for you. It is Open Source and always will be do to thier laws.
From FAQs in this month's blog

OpenHAB is another alternative too.

(I use HA as it was the easier to get into, I had started with OpenHAB.)
