You don't need anything plugged into the USB-serial device (e.g. the Arduino). It's the USB converter device itself that should be auto-detected when inserted, and the appropriate device drivers installed. Things on the other end of serial ports are not auto detected.
I just tested a Zero with an admittedly old Desktop OS install, and plugging in a DebugProbe (which has a serial device inside) results in a /dev/ttyACM0
I'll update the OS to see if there is a regression.
