Ok I imaged a fresh copy of Pi OS onto the SSD from a Ubuntu laptop and then plugged it back into the hub and tried to boot my Pi 4:

(About 10 minutes go by)
mmc1: controller never released inhibit bits. You are in rescue mode. After logging in, type "journalctl -xb" to view system logs,
"systemctl reboot" to reboot, "systemctl default" or "exit" to boot into default mode.
Cannot open access to console, the root account is locked.

The get several EXT4-fs error messages:

I then plugged the hub into a USB 2 port on the Pi and the mouse/keyboard into the USB 3 ports and booted it again. This time it came up ok and it's working fine.
