My issue is obviously a different one and only seems related to this thread. The error messages are the same but unfortunately entirely unrelated to the actual issue at hand.
The external HDD in use is a 2,5" with 5400rpm. The other USB device connected is a DAC, Topping D10s, also drawing power from the USB socket.
My guess is, the external HDD is just too power hungry. This leads to a shutdown of WiFi, while no such issue is ever hinted at in the error messages. WiFi is not disabled, because an SSID scan remains possible and shows the real APs in the area. Only connecting does not work anymore.
So when replacing the external HDD with a flash drive, things start working. WiFi remains bad (speed drops or complete drop outs at times), but it works.
