Just to note, that while it has been working for me, I tried connecting today and I am only getting a black screen as well.Just to note that I don't have a problem with auto-login turned on when using RDP ...
So something in the last two weeks has broken something. I don't know what, whether it was some update/upgrade, a change of kernel, or simply having rebooted my Pi.
Turning off 'auto-login to the desktop' hasn't solved it from me. Nor logging in as another user.
Hurrah! I'm just as screwed as everyone else
