If you're using the standard drivers then it should work.
Have you got a recent enough kernel to include that option? "uname -a" needs to report a date of May 2025 or newer. Similarly "dtoverlay -h imx296" should report that "sync-sink" is a valid override.
Ensure you have NOT added a kernel command line override for "imx296.trigger_mode", nor added the option to /etc/modprobe.d/*, as those can also enable external trigger mode.
