Actually it hasn't proven to be that finicky, or fussy in the choice of inductor. We've used several different ones with no issues.And for the RP235X I would use a regulator for the 1V1 DVDD supply to avoid issues with the finicky external circuit layout and inductor orientation for the on-chip voltage generator, even if that does preclude low power operation.
But yes an external regulator does avoid all potential issues and especially makes sense for a multiple MCU PCB, provided you're careful with routing voltage drops.
