Troubleshooting • Black screen after desktop startup help needed

Im still learning here so please be easy on me.
I had my Pi4 up and running great, used one sd card for my grands to run retropi and another to run my pi desktop.
I decided to add winlink to my desktop as im a ham radio operator. But when I was following instructions to install it it told me to update witch I did.
Now my VGA monitor goes black, I googled the problem and followed the instructions took the SD out put it in my windows 11 computer changed the text in the program by putting a f in front up the text to make it except the vga adaptor and it seemed to be fine again desktop was up and running great.
I left the room and came back and it was back to black screen again and wouldn't wake up. so I took out the SD card REINSTALLED the Pi 4 os redid the f text saved and rebooted, now I get the rainbow on startup the starting Raspberry desktop screen pops up the desktop for a sec and goes black screen again can anyone give me the instructions to fix this?
Please give it to me in idiot proof payments terms as i said im just starting out with this whole coding thing so I gotta have simple to follow step by step instructions
