EEPROM version is at least updated when you do in-place upgrade from RPiOS64 Bookworm to Trixie. So both my RPI4 have version

On my 'TV' Pi4, I set 0xf241 as that one should look first on SD-cards, then USB3-SATA_SSD, then network. Currently boots+runs from SD-card. I had hot-plugged 3 days ago an USB3-SATA_SSD and it turned out only rootfs was mounted on /, no bootFAT and other extra mounts on rootfs. I discovered because somehow most TV channels were disabled. There must have been something happened on some low-level, which is no surprise anymore for a Pi4 and USB stuff. Anyway, SSD was not needed anymore, so removed it, also upgraded (Debian13.1) and reboot. Now fine.

On my 'server' Pi4 I never did any change order myself, so shows no setting, but it should be 0xf41. That one must boot from USB3-SATA_SSD but I also have an empty SD-card inserted (bootloader does not find firmware files so selects USB). It runs for 29 days Trixie now. Usually reboot is no issue, but with new bootloader I am not sure. LVM storage volumes got corrupted last time, that must have also been the time that bootloader got updated.

You should read the docs for what BOOT_ORDER currently means. https://www.raspberrypi.com/documentati ... boot_order
