Oh, and whatever you decide keep, the OS and media files on separate physical devices. A car is a hostile environment (12v isn't, 12v is noisy, etc) so when the OS gets corrupted it'll be much easier to deal with if you don't have to first back up 1TB of media files.
Question on this - does the OS get corrupted on these a lot or is this a rare event? I keep all my music on a master backup so I would most likely just format a new drive and copy the music back over, not a lot of effort if it's just something that might happen every few years. If it's something that might happen every few weeks, then I'd be looking at something other than a Raspberry. If it's a rarity then I'd just as soon do away with having two drives if one will run the show. Are there any reasons other than a little less recovery time that would make running two drives vs one preferable? And if running just one, would the base or the USB be the faster or more reliable solution?
