What do "df -h" and "df -i" show when the "no space" message appears?
The Lite version of Trixie should fit on a 32GB card with loads of space to spare (I installed it on an 8GB card recently), so I don't think it's a simple case of the root filesystem filling up.
One thing that has changed is that /tmp is now a tmpfs instead of being part of the main filesystem, so the size is limited. On a Pi 2B it would probably default to around 450MB. If your tarfile gets extracted to there it may fill up the filesystem quite quickly. Maybe extract it to /var/tmp instead.
