It's going to help us help you if you clarify what you mean by "a non-Pi5 OS". And while you're at it tell us what PSU you're using (most things except the official 25W/45W units will require a press of the power button to confirm booting from USB).

x86? That's not going to boot on any Pi regardless of storage media.

RPiOS Bookworm or Trixie 32bit? Should boot on a Pi5 just fine but will use a 64bit kernel.

An old release of RPiOS that predates the release of the Pi5? Unlikely to boot fully and won't have all of the required drivers if it does boot.

A third party OS that predates the Pi5? See above.

A USB drive without a first FAT32 partition that contains the required files? Not going to boot and will skip to the next media in the specified boot order.

A USB drive without a FAT32 partition? See above.

Something else?
