For me, if X-11 is dropped, and I can't connect via RDP, I'll just keep using an older version of Raspberry Pi OS which does support it

I'm not at all convinced X11 is going to disappear completely in the near future. Not least because folks use ssh forwarding.*

Wayland started as a hobby project by a single RedHat engineer.

X11 started as a collaboration between MIT and engineers at DEC, HP, IBM and Sun to create a clean design based on prior experience with X10.

Both are written in C and both are old.

I find the project to create a entirely new X11 with the Zig programming language interesting.

This, along with the XLibre fork, makes me think that X11 will be around for a long time still.
