On that computer, can you run sudo rpi-self-update-cli
Choose an operating system and select to preserve the home directory (I assume you were doing that before), but answer 'N' to the "Proceed?" question.
On the screen it should have "SSH password auth: true (mirrored from this system)"
Also in the /tmp/selfupdate-cloudinit.XXXXXX file there should be a line
ssh_pwauth: true
