When we use the Pico some time back, if using a main.py. so if a program was running. Then I could not connect to it. I had to crash the pico in some way. For us it could be taking the i2c sensor off, so the program crashed. this let Thonny talk to the Pico, otherwise Thonny just had a backend crash.

Hold down the BOOTSEL button and then keeping it help down, connect it to your computer.
You should see it as a drive on the computer.
That'll tell you if the cable is ok.
