I have some SBC with RK3588 + Mali G610MC4. I ran Joshua Riek Ubuntu on them. Really powerful! YouTube in 4k was no problem. Unfortunately, he shut everything down, and no updates came out after that.

But I still have them. Radxa Rock 5B 8GB. It's been a while since I had them up. Possibly I'll check what has happened in software on them soon.

I am using Debian Sid standard distro kernel (7.1.4+deb14-arm64 #1 SMP PREEMPT Debian 7.1.4-1 (2026-07-19) aarch64) on RK3588 boards and also on RPi4. All UEFI firmware base, for RPi4 that needs some UEFI binary on the bootFAT and started via/in config.txt but runs fine, quick unattended reboot as well. Use-case is server/CLI so don't care much about GPU/VPU capabilities at the moment.

If you want clarity about HW video decoding, take latest LibreELEC image for the particular platform. Test with 4Kp60 HEVC for example, then you will clearly notice if HW decoder is used or not.
1080p30 H264 is something both RPi5 and ROCK5B can do well in software, so HW decoding or not does not make a big difference for that.
