A little later, the microSD card (Samsung) has not gone read only - it can be formatted (using SD Card Formatter) and can read/write files to it from Pi4 and Win10 laptop (ENVY), using either of the two USB3 card readers i.e. they are working, so is the card.
Might be the USB3 port on my Win10 PC? (but that does not explain Win11 laptop fail...)
