It's worse than that. What happens to all those dhcp reservations when you upgrade to a new, better (hopefully) or at least different router? They're all gone. I've been worried about that since forever, and have run my own DHCP/DNS server for 20+ years, now on a Pi since the Pi4.
Under dhcpcd you can "request" an Ip address, I have statics set up in the router and requests on the Pi. if I change the router, as long as it is in the same subnet the request will usually be granted and I can set up the statics on the router at a later time. This means the router is still controlling the network IP allocations rather than getting jumped on by setting statics on the Pi.

I haven't found how to do the request using network manager without changing to dhcp, its part of the protocol so it is probably possible.
