I agree...Ethernet is going to be better if you can use it. WiFi is always more subject to interference:
That said; I use an adaptor based on rtl88x2bu and have been for years on a Pi3. It works great.
I'm not using the PI as a server. It's used to provide internet on a boat. The external rtl88x2bu connects to the marina or any other free WiFi and the internal adaptor is set as a hotspot...It works well.
At first, I used to have to use a custom driver as there wasn't one in the kernel; but now it's in the kernel and seems to be stable.
