Yes, tried that. All it did was to free up the stepper motors when everything is powered up. No shaft movement at all when sending a PUL signal.
I have just reconnected everything according to fig9 in the Stepperonline manual, with the PUL+ and DIR+ connections commoned together and connected to the 5v supply, and the data lines from the opto-isolators connected to the DIR- and PUL- connections. That gives me a 5v signal at the stepper drivers.
I'm now wondering two possibilities - maybe the current isn't high enough to trigger the inputs, or maybe my almost complete ignorance about open collector (common-collector) and pnp signal (common-emitter) connections are the problem.
