My experience has always been that it "just worked" - without me having to do anything special - no driver installs or whatever. I think it does pop up a window the first time saying "This is the first time you've plugged this device in - what do you want to do?", but you just kinda walk it through taking all the defaults and it works.
I know this "just worked" (*) with a plain old PiZero (no 2 or W) and Windows XP. I use Win7 in-house as well (**), and am pretty sure I tested it there, too, but cannot say that for certain (It's been a while...).
(*) Once I installed the right magic in the startup files on the PiZero, of course.
(**) But nothing later than that, b/c as we all know by now, all subsequent versions of Windows are c**p.
