This happened to me each time I did a fresh install and tried sudo apt update. I bought a brand new, genuine Canvas Go SD card from Amazon, which seemed to be from a good supplier. But I could use other SD cards, cheaper ones and they had no problems. But the genuine SD card seems to be not so good, maybe from a bad batch. I couldn't even find a fault with it by running a quick test. Not sure if I scanned the whole disk. But this is the only card that ever caused freezing for me, and so I don't use it in my Pi anymore
