In fairness to Synology, what they are actually doing is issuing a (fairly strongly worded) warning if you try to install a non-Synology drive, on the not totally unreasonable grounds that they can't guarantee the performance of a drive type they haven't tested and that they don't have the resources to test every other manufacturer's drives with their NAS systems. AFAIK, it is easy enough to bypass the warning and go ahead with the installation - it certainly was easy to do this last time I expanded my Synology NAS (about 6 months ago).
