Troubleshooting • Re: Pi 5 NVME Boot Kernel Panic

I am attempting to boot my Pi 5 with NVME. I already had it running Ubuntu 24.04.2 LTS off of an microSD card. I followed Jeff Geerling's blog post, made the config changes, and copied the data with rpi-clone. However, it will not boot. Below are my steps attempted, eeprom config, cmdline.txt, config.txt, and a boot log. Please let me know if you have thoughts on how to resolve
Ask that geerling guy. I won't click on that link to figure out what is written there and guess how you might have understood or interpreted it. Or ask Canonical, it is their distro. Or ask the supplier of that unknown convertor board (PCIE flatcable etc.). Maybe it is your PSU.

At least with loglevel=7 there should be something about PCI-E in a kernel log, and I do not see it. That rootfs is not found I have seen many times myself for my Rockchip boards with various kernel versions and own kernel builds. It can simply mean PCI-E (the single end-user usable lane in the Pi5) is ignored/not working, so no rootfs.
Can all be expected more or less, same as 20 to 40 years ago when people build their own IBM-compatible PC.
The question then was: is it IBM compatible? Now it is even worse as we call it 'Single-Board-Computer' but we let ourselves fool, it is just a set of components, just like motherboard, expansion cards, power-supply, floppies, MFM/IDE-HDDs. MCA-bus, ISA-bus, MS-DOS, IBM-DOS, DR-DOS Windows OS/2 etc etc.
If you want to use an RPi out of the comfort zone of inserting an RPL branded pre-installed SD-card and using 'official' power adaptor, make sure you understand all ins and outs of the bootstage specific to RPL/Broadcom and also kernel development/patching skills will help.

It is easy to get an RPi booted with a know-to-work firmware+kernel from RPiOS64, it is even described in an official .PDF, but with all AI and tremendous amount of websites it cannot be found anymore I would say and I am to lazy to look-up that URL again as I have done before. Maybe you can ask ChatGPT about that URL/PDF.
