What Pi, What GNSS device ?

which is essentially an NEO-7M chip.

When you enable the serial port in raspi-config (termianl) or raspberry Configuration (desktop), you need to stop the console too and reboot to make it happen.

This is a bit unclear.
I've rebooted many times since enabling the the serial port. I guess what I want to know - is there anything else that uses the Serial Port that might stop my script from polling it?

There are many examples of serial reading for gps/gnss devices on the forum

I have no trouble reading - I have trouble keeping the serial port alive.
I'm also not sure how to do error trapping do that the program can continue if the port does give an error.
