A new £15 gbp [ $20 usd ] RPi Zero W board would be one way to make rapid progress. (That's probably less than the value of the volunteer time that has been expended to help you.)
Or, as @thagrol's Guide suggests, use an 'old school' serial UART device to monitor and interact with the default console pins on the 2x20-way header on the RPi Zero. It is listed as a troubleshooting step, but it might provide all the access you need for your task.
