start with a fresh uSD and stop messing around with the display settings.
use the Screen configuration editor for changing the resolution. only those supported by your display will be shown.
The Screen Configuration Editor is what my son was using. No idea why switching resolutions and/or refresh rates (only to those supported by the monitor) caused the permanent loss of signal to the 27" monitor, UNLESS the 20" one was plugged in. And it's pretty amazing - unplug the 20" HDMI cable, immediately the 27" loses signal permanently. Plug the 20" back in, signal comes back to the 27".
